One reactor lost control during a low-power test, then the building exploded.
A safety test became the worst nuclear accident in history on April 26th, 1986.
Nearby Pripyat was a company town built around one industry: the power station.
Vladimir Shevchenko directed and scripted 1986's doc Chernobyl: chronicle of difficult weeks.
Visiting or living in the area around the plant is restricted.
The CIA report called a graphite fire a major problem for rescuers and plant staff.
A CIA assessment found the reactor hall's radiation level above lethal levels.
Outside the plant, the abandoned city became evidence: apartments, classrooms, famous Ferris wheel.
Radiation spread. The Soviet Union established a Zone of Alienation around it.
The restricted zone covers about 1,000 square miles around the plant.
In 1987, another production, Chernobyl, the True Story, joined the record.
By 1992, Nova followed scientists clearing debris for missing fuel.
The Library of Congress now holds hundreds of books on Chernobyl's history and aftermath.
Each camera preserved a viewpoint, but no film contained the whole disaster.
A quiet space opens between memory and the empty horizon.
The city of Pripyat was abandoned, as the record states.
The Ferris wheel and vacant apartments became global nuclear-catastrophe symbols.
But the familiar images can hide a landscape still changing beyond the city square.
Film records the frame, but radiation, distance, and restricted access remain outside.
The archive showed filmmakers, scientists, officials, and residents disputing what to remember.
Where it leaves off
The archives preserved competing memories, but beyond the camera lay a harder question: what had the forbidden landscape become?
