The hikers cut their way out through the tent from the inside.
Earlier, the group established camp on the eastern slopes of Kholat Syakhl.
Their leader, Igor Dyatlov, was 23, guiding the hardest-rated expedition available.
Investigators estimated the hikers began installing the tent around 5 p.m. on February 1st.
Investigators read their last camera frame as snow excavation around 5 p.m.
Their goal, Mount Otorten, waited about 6 miles (10 kilometers) north.
Dyatlov was expected to telegraph after reaching Vizhai on February 12th.
By February 20th, the families had become worried and raised the alarm.
In that cold, a tent meant hope; abandoning it felt like a verdict.
Mikhail Sharavin was among the student volunteers searching for the group.
On February 26th, searchers found the tent, partly buried but still preserved.
Sharavin used an ice pick to uncover the tent entrance.
Inside were a route map, official papers, money, a flask, boots, rucksacks, and food.
A plate of sliced salo appeared prepared for supper when the group left.
Sharavin proposed a toast to the group’s health.
Another man suggested drinking instead to the group’s eternal peace.
The tent showed no struggle, and investigators found no evidence of outsiders.
Experts identified three openings cut from inside with a knife or sharp weapon.
Searchers found eight to nine pairs of tracks descending from the knife-cut tent, some nearly barefoot…
