The hikers cut their way out of the tent with knives.
Outside, searchers found eight or nine tracks down from camp, some nearly barefoot.
It happened on Kholat Syakhl, Northern Urals, in February 1959.
9 Soviet ski hikers died there after leaving shelter, circumstances disputed.
Inside were boots, papers, money, alcohol, supper.
The Soviet investigation found 6 died of hypothermia, 3 of physical trauma.
One victim had major skull damage; two had severe chest trauma.
Searchers found the tent partly covered in snow on February 26th.
Investigators found no struggle or evidence of others near the tent.
In May, four bodies were found lying in running creek water.
Three bodies also had damaged soft tissue around the head and face.
A 1959 criminal case opened to investigate their deaths.
But what forced them outside remains unknown to this day.
By 2019, prosecutors said 75 versions existed, with natural phenomena in review.
Only Yuri Yudin survived because illness forced him back days earlier.
Sharavin toasted the group's health. Another man suggested eternal peace.
The investigation concluded a compelling natural force caused the deaths.
In 2020, Russian officials said an avalanche likely forced survivors out.
Later researchers called a small slab avalanche plausible, saying no one knows.
The official wording never named the exact force behind their flight.
