A shackled box struck the water before 15,000 witnesses in New York.
Houdini was inside, and the water erased him from view.
This was Harry Houdini, the stunt performer called the Handcuff King.
Records place the escape on July 15th or 16th, 1914.
The New York waterfront became a stage as the stunt moved toward water.
Metal shackles secured the box before it reached the water.
Inside, Houdini was bound within the shackled box.
The challenge centered on the one element that could end it.
He had performed his first overboard box escape two years earlier.
He'd also debuted the Water Torture Cell in Berlin in 1912.
But past escapes could not open the box sinking now.
A public stunt can become a public death before anyone knows.
The closed box moved beyond the solid edge of the waterfront.
Spectators could track the box only until it slipped beneath the waterline.
Then the box struck the surface and dropped beneath the crowd's sightline.
For a breath, tension seemed to hover over the water.
Houdini's book credited his ability to painstaking effort and compromise.
“Painstaking effort and compromise,” Houdini wrote in Handcuff Secrets.
No witness could see whether that effort was working beneath the surface.
The crowd of fifteen thousand fell quiet. Every second the box stayed under was a second nobody could explain.
