Transcript

  1. The commonly remembered film Shazaam, starring Sinbad, never existed.

  2. A similar genie movie did exist: Kazaam, starring Shaquille O'Neal.

  3. That collision between memory and reality is the Mandela Effect.

  4. A 2013 study examined false recall and false recognition. Participants viewed household-scene photos.

  5. Each scene stayed onscreen for 15 seconds, long enough to build a mental room.

  6. Next, some recalled scenes for 12 minutes. Others did math.

  7. The trap: answers supposedly supplied by five previous participants.

  8. Those invented observers had listed objects never in the photographs.

  9. A confederate introduced items absent from studied scenes. Participants often reported those contagion items later.

  10. misinformation effect: later details reported as part of the original event.

  11. Participants eventually reported incorrect items across all conditions.

  12. A memory can feel private, though another's suggestion helped shape it.

  13. The final test asked each item's source: original scene, suggestion, both, or neither.

  14. Initial testing reduced false source recognition. Fewer incorrect items were attributed to original event.

  15. Fiona Broome coined Mandela Effect in 2010 for Mandela's collective false memory.

  16. At Dragon Con, others believed Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s.

  17. Later, study shifted to individual testing, leaving one participant alone.

Where it leaves off

But once the participant was alone, would the absent object vanish—or return as a memory of the original room?
