In 2004, scientists found a village—and two adults—under Tambora’s ash.
Mount Tambora, on Sumbawa, was one of Indonesia’s tallest mountains before the eruption.
Before 1815, Tambora rose 14,100 feet above the island.
Tambora became restless in 1812 and began rumbling on April 5th, 1815.
The first explosions were initially mistaken for distant cannon fire.
On April 10th, 1815, three eruption plumes rose, merging.
The major explosions peaked on April 10th and 11th, 1815.
Pyroclastic flows poured down every side of the peninsula toward the sea.
They wiped out villages, then triggered tsunamis along the coast.
Excavation revealed preserved settlement remains beneath the ash.
Under the tools, a settlement began to take shape.
A brush revealed the edge of the buried settlement.
A catastrophe becomes legible when its scale fits inside one human life.
Two adults were found beneath about 10 feet of ash, or 3 meters.
The site was described as the “Pompeii of the East.” The eruption destroyed the former Kingdom of Tambora.
The eruption removed Tambora’s estimated 13,100-foot peak, forming a caldera about 4 miles wide.
It fell from 14,100 feet to just under 10,000.
The Rajah of Sanggar described the mountain as appearing like liquid fire.
Smaller particles from the eruption reached the stratosphere.
The eruption reduced sunlight, making 1816 the Year Without a Summer.
Crop failures and food shortages hit North America, Europe, and Asia.
More than 100,000 people died from resulting shortages over the next decade.
