Before Titanic struck, the Atlantic’s ice network was already sending warnings.
Titanic left Southampton for New York on April 10th, 1912, praised as an unsinkable ship.
Ice reports went out to the maritime world every day before April 14th.
Several days before April 14th, ice had been reported near the eventual disaster site.
The German steamer Amerika reported two large icebergs; that message passed through Titanic’s radio room.
A junior officer carried the report toward the bridge.
Titanic also transmitted a radio report about the iceberg that would cause its sinking.
On the fourth day of its maiden voyage, Titanic fatally struck an iceberg off Newfoundland.
About four hours later, the largest passenger ship yet built sank at 2:20 a.m.
More than 1,500 people died, puncturing the era’s confidence in humanity’s triumph over nature.
The Hydrographer said Titanic transmitted by radio the report of the iceberg that caused its sinking.
The Hydrographer wrote that heeding the warning Titanic transmitted would probably have saved the ship.
The Senate investigation would scrutinize the warnings—and Titanic’s speed that night.
Titanic carried 20 lifeboats, enough for only about half of the 2,228 people aboard.
