Niagara Falls looked less like a landscape than a machine waiting to wake.
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American engineer and physicist. His work included the discovery of an alternating-current electrical system.
He came to the United States in 1884 and started at Edison's lab.
Thomas Edison employed Tesla at the Edison Machine Works company.
Beyond alternating current, Tesla also worked on wireless communication and remote control.
By 1888, Tesla had invented the first usable alternating-current motor.
At the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, alternating-current generators were demonstrated.
The display helped make alternating current a public spectacle.
Tesla designed the first Niagara Falls hydroelectric plant to harness the Falls' energy.
The first Niagara hydroelectric plant opened in 1896.
Tesla's AC system became the plant's electrical design.
Its purpose was direct: harness the falls and convert their energy into electricity.
For Tesla, distance was not a wall; it was an engineering problem.
Niagara power traveled 22 miles to Buffalo, proving AC could serve cities.
His 1896 motor patent said one line circuit could replace two.
That design reduced wiring while keeping the motor's magnetic fields working together.
Then, in 1898, Tesla presented New York with a different kind of machine.
Tesla's remote-controlled boat was demonstrated in New York in 1898.
The boat showed that signals could control motion from a distance.
From power systems to remote machines, Tesla imagined technology acting across distance.
Tesla was described as private, a loner, and a perennial bachelor.
Where it leaves off
The remote-controlled boat obeyed an unseen operator, and Tesla now wanted unseen commands to cross the entire world.
